Scented candles and candles
What you need to observe when selling candles and scented candles in the EU, explained clearly. We check your candle and deliver label text, safety warnings, safety data sheet and, if required, the UFI notification.
Send enquiryWhich obligations apply to candles?
Two areas apply to every candle sold in the EU: product safety (fire risk, safety warnings, manufacturer details) and, for scented candles, also chemicals legislation because of the fragrance oils. Candles without fragrance usually only need the first part.
1. Safety warnings on the candle
Under the EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), candles may only be sold if they are safe in normal use. This includes clear warnings. Common practice are the safety symbols and texts of the standard EN 15494, for example:
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Burn out of reach of children and pets.
- Do not burn on or near anything that can catch fire.
- Keep burning candles at least 10 cm apart.
- Keep away from draughts.
The warnings must be in the language of the country where the candle is sold.
2. Manufacturer details under the GPSR
The candle or its packaging must show:
- name or trade mark and postal and e-mail address of the manufacturer
- for manufacturers outside the EU: details of the responsible person in the EU
- a batch or article number so that the product can be identified clearly
In an online shop, the same details and the safety warnings must also be visible in the offer.
3. Scented candles: CLP labelling
Fragrance oils often contain substances that can cause allergies or are harmful to aquatic life. Whether the candle must be labelled as a result depends on the quantity:
- little fragrance: usually only the allergy statement EUH208 (“Contains … May produce an allergic reaction.”)
- more fragrance: hazard pictogram, signal word, hazard and precautionary statements, for example for skin sensitisation or environmental hazard
- UFI and poison centre notification are only required if the candle is classified for health or physical hazards. A classification for environmental hazards alone does not trigger a notification.
The basis for the check is the safety data sheet of your fragrance oil and the fragrance content of the candle.
Example: safety label for candles
