Biocidal product notification

What is a biocidal product?

Biocidal products are intended to control or repel harmful organisms, for example disinfectants, insect repellents, wood preservatives or products against mosquitoes and rodents. They are subject to the EU Biocidal Products Regulation (EU) No 528/2012.

Notification or authorisation?

As a rule, biocidal products need an authorisation. This is an EU requirement for selling. As long as the active substances are still being assessed in the EU review programme, transitional rules of the member states apply. In Germany such products must be notified to the BAuA before they are placed on the market, under the Biocides Implementing Ordinance (ChemBiozidDV). The BAuA assigns a registration number (§ 5 ChemBiozidDV). It must appear on the product, on labels usually in the form “BAuA-Reg.-Nr.: N-12345”, and also in every online or mail order offer (§ 3 ChemBiozidDV).

Good to know
