Which obligations apply to air fresheners?

Air fresheners are chemical mixtures and fall under the CLP Regulation. The formula is decisive: fragrance oils often contain skin-sensitising substances, diffuser liquids are often flammable or eye-irritating, and many fragrances are harmful to aquatic life. This results in a label, a safety data sheet and usually a poison centre notification with UFI code, all required before sale in the EU.

What matters for each product

  • Reed diffusers and fragrance oils: if the liquid contains hydrocarbons, it may be classified as an aspiration hazard (H304). A child-resistant fastening and a tactile warning of danger are then mandatory when the product is sold to consumers. The tactile warning also applies to flammable liquids of category 1 and 2.
  • Room sprays: as aerosols they also need labelling under the Aerosol Dispensers Directive and are classified as aerosols under CLP.
  • Car fragrances: fragrance gel in a tin and liquid fragrance dispensers are mixtures with full CLP labelling. We check whether your product is a mixture or an article.
  • Allergy statement: if a skin-sensitising fragrance is present below the classification limit but at 0.1 % or more, statement EUH208 is required.
  • Advertising claims: claims such as “antibacterial” or “kills germs” can turn an air freshener into a biocidal product, with its own obligations.
