Bioethanol, fuel paste and lamp oils

Bioethanol, fuel paste and lamp oils

Fuels for tabletop fireplaces, fondue and decorative lamps are flammable and have their own special rules. We clarify classification, closure, label and poison centre notification for selling them in the EU.

Which obligations apply to bioethanol and fuel paste?

Bioethanol and most fuel pastes are classified as flammable liquids (usually H225). This means full CLP labelling, a safety data sheet and a poison centre notification with UFI code before they may be sold in the EU. Consumer products have additional special rules.

The most important requirements

  • Tactile warning of danger: mandatory for flammable liquids of category 1 and 2 supplied to consumers.
  • Methanol: denatured ethanol for consumers must not contain 0.6 % methanol or more (REACH Annex XVII entry 69). From 3 % methanol a child-resistant fastening would also be required.
  • Denaturants influence the classification, for example for eye irritation. We check the exact composition.
  • Lamp oils and barbecue lighter fluids: if the liquid is classified as an aspiration hazard (H304), it must not be coloured or perfumed for decorative lamps, and special statements on the packaging apply (REACH Annex XVII entry 3).
