Mosquito repellent and other biocidal products
Insect repellents, disinfectants and wood preservatives are biocidal products. They may only be sold in the EU with an authorisation or under national transitional rules; in Germany they need a BAuA registration number before sale. We handle notification, label and poison centre notification.

A product is a biocidal product if it controls, repels or renders harmless harmful organisms by chemical means. Typical examples are mosquito repellent (product type 19), disinfectants, insecticides and wood preservatives. Even an advertising claim such as “antibacterial” can turn a product into a biocidal product.
What is required before sale
- Authorisation or transitional rules: many active substances are still in the EU review programme. Until then, national transitional law applies to products containing them.
- Germany: notification to the BAuA and a registration number (for example “BAuA-Reg.-Nr.: N-12345”) on the product and in online offers.
- Labelling under Article 69 of the Biocidal Products Regulation: active substances with content, use, instructions for use and further information, in addition to CLP labelling.
- Advertising: mandatory statement “Use biocides safely. Always read the label and product information before use.” Statements that play down the risk, such as “non-toxic”, are prohibited.
- Poison centre notification with UFI code if the product is classified under CLP.
