E-liquids, vapes and pods

E-liquids, vapes and pods

E-cigarettes and liquids need an EU-CEG notification six months before sale, plus a CLP label, the health warning under tobacco law and usually a poison centre notification. We handle everything from a single source.

Which obligations apply to e-liquids and vapes?

E-cigarettes and refill containers are subject to the Tobacco Products Directive 2014/40/EU and at the same time to the CLP Regulation. Before sale comes the notification via the EU-CEG portal, at least six months in advance. In Germany this has also applied to nicotine-free liquids since 2021.

The most important requirements

  • Limits: a maximum of 20 mg nicotine per ml, refill containers a maximum of 10 ml, disposable vapes and cartridges a maximum of 2 ml.
  • Closure: child-resistant and tamper-evident, with leak-free refilling.
  • Health warning: “This product contains nicotine which is a highly addictive substance.” on 30 % of the main surfaces, plus a leaflet.
  • CLP label: liquids containing nicotine are usually classified as acutely toxic. This leads to pictogram, hazard statements, tactile warning and usually a poison centre notification with UFI code.
